SMTP spike in CPU - Domino 8.5.2

Here are some things I've tried.

When it first happened it resembled a problem that I have seen where the transaction logs can't keep up because of long running transactions.  I tried re-configuring the 2 mail.boxes.

No tlogs - no DAOS
Tlogs - No DAOS
No tLogs - DAOS
DAOS and TLOGS

I ran with DAOS and TLOGS from Sunday afternoon until 11:30 today without an issue.  Then had to kill SMTP when it went hog wild.  Then had to do it again minutes ago.

If you're not using SMTP on a server, you're not going to see this particular issue.  I think that is why the  reporting on it has been slim.  Many sites don't have a IBM Lotus Notes Domino server with an SMTP listener enabled.  And usually SMTP servers are among the last to be upgraded.

I post more as I know more.
