@Nathan - I wasn't aware that the NAB had any purpose-built extensibility hooks, but that doesn't change my recommendation in this case. The goal here was optimizing the user facing directory functions, and even "fixing" all the obvious "why aren't they there already" problems won't necessarily get us there. Customizing the NAB itself still makes plenty of sense for any number of other reasons, as does adding the obviously useful enhancements to the core design.

"But why aren't they there already?"

This is the real question. Why do we have the same fundamental design for the Domino directory that we've had now for the last 10 years. So many other parts of the product have advanced, yet the directory is the same, clunky, limited thing.

Kevin, there's all kinds of design in the public directory for extensibility that almost no one ever uses. This is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of that. $PersonExtensibleSubfom is the key element here if memory serves.

I totally support the idea of giving users a better UI experience when it comes to finding useful information, and these enhancements certainly qualify. But I don't see why the changes would need to be made to the NAB itself when a separate "Employee Directory" could achieve the same goal without complicating future upgrades. Yes, you will have to write an agent that pulls updates from the NAB on a regular basis, but that's easy.

What's more, you could get even more elaborate with your customizations while eliminating the need to document every little change so you can recreate it after the next upgrade. There are other potential benefits too. For instance you could list newly married employees under both last names to make it easier to find them. Or you could retain profiles of departed employees even after their person doc is removed, which might include new contact info. The possibilities are endless.

My way to deal with that is to only attend every other sesion and to dismiss all the "ifs", "when's" and "but's" from his speeches, then you bring it down to a manageble word count. He only puts those words in there to fake compassion and compromise for the uninitiated - two things that he does not really posess. compromise on how things should as oposed to how they are often don in the muddy world of IT is not realy in his personality ... I like that and wish I cold emulate that more!

b) Paul can be sarcastic when he wants, just tempt him with the nick-name Leprechaun the you will find sarcasm in abundance. Of course, you also have to mention green beer (he thinks it is gross). other than that, he is sarcasic anough when he is awake.

c) I agree the View people are nice ... they didnot chace me from the premisis and actually let me keep my ber when i had one. that counts for allot for me!!!

d) Last but not least ...
I have to admit, my response to this kind of thing is usually pretty condescending. Something along the lines of "dear customer, you are paying thousands of dollars for me to give you the best advice I have after nearly two decades of working with this particular platform. If I make a recommendation for an infrastructure approach, it is not frivolous or some kind of make-work program -- it is because I have more experience with these tools than any 5 people on your team combined. Perhaps, rather than hiring a technology expert, you thought you were hiring a waiter? At any rate, if you're going to argue about what constitutes a technical best practice, may I suggest you come armed with a bazooka?"

Then again, maybe that's why they have the sense not to send me to client sites these days. :-)
