Well, I think this is one of those cases that you state at the end -- usage is overtaking tradition. Indeed, that's how (English) grammar and usage rules work. Grammar and usage rules reflect established reality, not the other way around. That's why we don't use thee and thou anymore, though I'm sure there were folks who were upset to see them go.

The OED acknowledges that the use of "premise" as you've seen it may be shifting:

b. In pl. In extended use. A house or building together with its grounds, outhouses, etc., esp. a building or part of a building that houses a business. Now also occas. with sing. concord.

It's the last sentence.

If I had to harbor a guess, I'd say maybe this is something that's become acceptable only in a specific context -- in this case, business. "On-premise" is acceptable in this context, but "we're on the school premise" is certainly still not.

That being said, sometimes language does just evolve into general use in ways that are irritating and seem inaccurate. Take, for example, my personal pet peeve, "literally":

lit·er·al·ly/ˈlitərəlē/

Adverb:

1. In a literal manner or sense; exactly: "the driver took it literally when asked to go straight over the traffic circle".

2. Used to acknowledge that something is not literally true but is used for emphasis or to express strong feeling.

I mean, really, #2? That is just stupid. But there it is.

Finally, there are current grammar debates raging about the discontinued use of "whom" and about using "they" as a gender-neutral singular pronoun. Maybe not in our lifetimes....but maybe in my kids', those could shift.

This is probably more than you bargained for, but that's what you get for asking. Your other child who actually studies linguistics may have a different take as well.

Grammatically thine,

dpg
